Nails

A new batch of upcoming grisly goodies for you to evaluate and possibly pay the filmmaker’s rent by viewing ’em through the looking glass that is your wallet…

NAILS (2017)
“Dana Milgrom, a track coach who, having survived a near-death car accident, finds herself completely paralyzed and trapped inside her own body. While recovering she becomes convinced that an evil presence exists inside her hospital room and is intent on killing her.”

Pffft – the evil presence is the impending medical bill your health insurance won’t cover.

Tank 432

TANK 432 (November 25, 2016 / Limited)
“On the run and with nowhere to hide, a group of soldiers and their two prisoners take cover from a mysterious enemy inside an abandoned military war tank. While they try to keep the forces outside at bay, secrets are uncovered and little do they realize the real enemy is already among them, locked inside Tank 432.”

This one’s been out in the UK since August of 2015. Even so, the press release all but gives away the punchline by pointing out one of the prisoners is a werewolf. Okay, I don’t know for sure he’s a werewolf. But in cases like these, it’s best to just go with werewolf. Works in a lot more real life applications than you’d think.

Raw

RAW (march 10, 2017 / Limited)
“Everyone in Justine’s family is a vet – and a vegetarian. At 16, she’s a brilliant and promising student. When she starts at veterinary school, she enters a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world. During the first week of hazing rituals, desperate to fit in whatever the cost, she strays from her family principles when she eats raw meat for the first time. Justine will soon face the terrible and unexpected consequences of her actions when her true self begins to emerge.”

When Animals Dream / Dread

Sounds like a mash-up of Denmark’s When Animals Dream (2014) and Clive Barker’s Dread (2009). As part of its “face your fears” experiment, Dread features a gal who was sexually abused by her father, an employee at a meat packing plant. Not shockingly, she can’t even smell meat being cooked without gooning out.

As a test, she’s involuntarily forced to reconsider her culinary aversion after being locked in a room for days with no food except you know what. She tries to hold out, but as science tells us, room temperature beef has a tendency to go maggot-y and rancid-y when left out. Still, better than whatever Gas-n-Go™ calls a burger these days.

That said, I’m guessing the girl in Raw is either a werewolf or a cannibal or a line chef at Gas-n-Go™. Or a combination thereof.

Evolution

EVOLUTION (November 25, 2016 / Limited)
“A young boy living in a mysterious, isolated seaside clinic uncovers the sinister purposes of his keepers.”

I liked this better when it was called Morgan (2016). P.S. He’s probably a werewolf.

Bloodrunners

BLOODRUNNERS (2017)
“By 1933 Prohibition has proven a booming enterprise, where average citizens break the law, hide in the shadows and operate at night. While shaking down the newest speakeasy in the local underground, corrupt cop Jack Malone and his men uncover a clan of vampires hell bent on taking over the town. Now Chesterfield (Ice-T), an ancient vampire, and his horde must hide their secret at any cost.”

Rap/movie/media superstar Ice-T is pretty dang cool. More so as a vampire. I still think rap music sucks AND blows, though. (Note to rap music fans: There is a cure for your affliction – IRON MAIDEN.)

Encounters

Encounters (2015) is a just-released in Denmark (available on VOD) found footage sci-fi flick. What makes it stand out from all the other “everybody is doing it” found footage flicks? Pretty much nothing. Shaky camera, screaming, annoying characters, crazy running, requisite night vision, camera batteries that just won’t die as easily as the annoying characters… You think all they did was download the cookie cutter plot, turn on the GoPro™, and start emoting with a runny nose.

Yes and no. While the filming technique is as played as this blog, there’s something more to Encounters than just another found footage knock-off. First, the plot…

Encounters

“The four young filmmakers know the stories, they’ve seen the movies and they joke about it as they travel into the Swedish woods to shoot yet another low-budget horror movie.”

“But though they make fun of horror clichés, there’s nothing to laugh about when the group gets lost and one of the actors disappears only to return hours later, naked and in a catatonic state. As much as they try to figure out what’s going on, none of them have the faintest idea of what they’re about to experience, or how to explain what’s been captured on tape.”

Encounters

If you can get past the budgetary limitations (Encounters cost $2.79 – about as much as a wienerbrød with a side of ketchup) and inevitable screaming/bleeding/dying, there’s some impressive UFO effects, decent pacing, and nice ramp ups to the instances of screaming/bleeding/dying.

Look for a worldwide release shortly. While you’re waiting, watch Encounter (2015), YET ANOTHER found footage sci-fi flick with almost the same name/premise/budget.

Guilt in the Time of Dragons

The Shamer's Daughter

Fantasy horror flick The Shamer’s Daughter (i.e., Skammeren’s Datter) was released in Denmark back in March, 2015. I couldn’t find a bus that could get me there, so I missed the bus on that one.

Then Shamer was premiered at the 2015 Fantasia festival in Montreal last summer. Still no bus. Is it just my imagination, or does public transit not want me to see this period piece involving medieval dragons, witches and a throne that needs to be sat on? Conspiracy theories aside, I think we all know the answer here.

The Shamer's Daughter

Like waiting for a bus that never comes, I’ll just have to twiddle my thumbs even more for The Shamer’s Daughter to come out on VHS cassette tape. Or VOD. And here’s why my patience – which is running thin – will pay off…

The Shamer's Daughter

“The Shamer’s daughter, Dina, has unwillingly inherited her mother’s supernatural ability – she can look straight into the soul of other people, making them feel ashamed of themselves. In a semi-realistic medieval fantasy world with dragons and witchcraft, Dina and her family are thrown into the adventure of a lifetime in order to put the rightful heir to the Kingdom of Dunark.”

The Shamer's Daughter

For the record, I don’t need to have some stinky Renaissance fair chick peep into what’s left of my soul to make me feel ashamed of myself. Alcohol does that just fine, thank you.

P.S. I’m the rightful heir to the Kingdom of Dunark. That’s what the downtrodden villagers at yon Poggie Tavern call me. Better credentials are not needed.

Werewoman

When Animals Dream

I suppose if I were to be an animal (more than I already am – heh), I’d probably go with being a werewolf. Think of the advantages: Never have to get a haircut. Stay out all night. Scare the “for sale” sign into your neighbors. Pee on anything. Sure, there’s probably drawbacks, but other than fleas, I can’t think of any right now.

The girl in the upcoming movie When Animals Dream is a werewolf. I think being a werewoman might be more of a challenge for chicks: Hairy legs. No dress would fit. Eat meat and never taste another salad. Can’t sit down to pee. Yep, they call it “Wolf-Man” for a reason. Sexist? Yeah, probably.

In When Animals Dream (due out August 8, 2015 theaters/ On Demand), a young girl is hunted down by those living in her town when it’s revealed she’s a werewolf.

When Animals Dream

“It’s a coming-of-age horror film set in a secluded fishing village of Denmark about a young girl falling in love and discovering she’s a werewolf by her mother at the same time as she gets hunted down by the villagers.” She might want to talk to Frankenstein’s monster for some survival tips.

When Animals Dream is also described as Let The Right One In meets Carrie. Cool – there’s some blood on the horizon. Which begs the sexist question: If blood, which is like catnip to a werewolf, what happens when a female werewolf gets her other monthly cycle? Talk about the ultimate psycho b*tch. Your strategy? Leave town.

P.S. Over the ages there have been many a female werewolf. Start with She-Wolf of London (1946) and go from there.
